Authorities are investigating the motives and actions of a former Marine and security guard accused of weapons violations, following his alleged reconnaissance at the Trump National Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes shortly before a presidential visit. Jeanine John Taele faces federal charges for possessing an unregistered short-barreled rifle.
Taele was reportedly observed at the golf course on two separate occasions, wearing an earpiece, photographing Secret Service agents, and carrying ammunition. He was arrested on Sunday during his second visit. A search of his residence revealed a significant cache of firearms, including an illegally modified rifle, body armor, high-capacity magazines, and concerning notebooks and radio devices. Officials are working to determine his ultimate motive and whether his actions were intended to target President Trump, though he has not been charged in connection with the President.
During his initial observation on Friday, Taele was seen walking the golf course grounds. His vehicle, a Toyota Tundra, was noted to have an unregistered license plate. He returned on Sunday and was detained by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies. Taele reportedly identified himself to federal agents as a State Department employee present for security detail. A background check uncovered an outstanding warrant, leading to a search of his truck where a loaded pistol, binoculars, and a "security protection agent" badge were discovered.
Taele, a decorated former Marine who served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, has pleaded not guilty to state charges. His military service concluded in March 2016, and he held an armed security guard license until 2025. He is also sought by El Segundo police in connection with a strong-armed robbery in November 2025.
The public defender's office representing Taele has not yet commented. The investigation into the full scope of his alleged actions and intentions is ongoing.
