Ventura County Animal Services humanely euthanized a 3-year-old German shepherd mix named Bruce on Wednesday, concluding months of legal proceedings. The county cited Bruce's involvement in four separate incidents resulting in serious injuries to individuals, including a teenager.
The decision followed a week after a U.S. District Court judge denied an emergency application filed by the Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center, a nonprofit organization that had been actively contesting the county's euthanasia order. The rescue center, which had previously housed Bruce before his adoption three years prior, argued in social media posts that the lifting of a federal stay did not compel immediate euthanasia and urged the county to agree to a pause or stipulated resolution.
County officials confirmed Bruce's humane euthanasia after the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals denied the rescue center's subsequent motion. In a statement, the agency emphasized the difficult nature of such decisions, balancing compassion for animals with the responsibility to ensure public safety. They noted that Bruce's owners had pursued legal challenges, with multiple courts upholding the county's original decision or refusing to intervene.
The legal saga began in March with an administrative hearing initiated by animal services after a petition detailing four alleged unprovoked biting incidents dating back to February 2024. The incidents involved multiple individuals, including a 16-year-old bitten in the face, a man bitten multiple times on his knee, chest, and forearm, a woman who required surgery for a forearm injury, and another man who reported being knocked down and nearly bitten twice while walking his wife in a wheelchair.
Following a review of evidence, including victim photographs, animal services declared Bruce a vicious animal in March, mandating euthanasia. Bruce's owners appealed to the Ventura County Superior Court, but a judge upheld the county's order. Subsequent attempts by the owners to file additional appeals or obtain a stay were denied by the courts.
The Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center intervened in May, seeking a federal injunction to halt the euthanasia order while pursuing a federal appeal. Although a federal judge initially granted an injunction, the stay was later lifted after the group's federal appeals case was dismissed. The nonprofit's final attempt to delay the euthanasia, a motion filed with the 9th Circuit, was ultimately unsuccessful.
On Wednesday evening, the Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center posted on Facebook mourning Bruce's death, stating, "To us, Bruce was never just a case number, a legal dispute, or a public controversy. He was one of ours."
