Samsung's latest foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold8, has landed with a revised design that tackles a long-standing issue: the wobbly camera bump. This new shape makes the phone significantly nicer to use, especially for split-screen multitasking, offering more breathing room than previous models.
One of the most noticeable improvements is the screen crease, which is now far less obvious and feels smoother under your fingers. While this is a welcome upgrade, the previous Folds suffered from a protruding camera module on the back, causing the phone to rock annoyingly when placed on a surface, a problem even a case couldn't fully solve. Competitors like Google and Apple have addressed similar design challenges with their own approaches.
The Fold8 offers a more comfortable user experience overall, even improving on split-screen functionality. Unlike its predecessor, the wider screen on the Fold8 provides ample space for apps, making it easier to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, including fitting three apps side-by-side.
Performance is top-notch on both the standard Fold8 and the pricier Ultra model, thanks to the identical Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, ensuring a fluid experience across all applications and games. The Ultra boasts a larger 5,000-mAh battery compared to the Fold8's 4,800-mAh cell, featuring Samsung's new silicon-carbon battery technology, which generally leads to longer screen-on time, though real-world usage can vary.
The primary difference lies in the camera system. While the standard Fold8 features capable 50-megapixel main and ultrawide sensors, the Fold8 Ultra steps up with a powerful 200-megapixel main sensor. Crucially, the Ultra also includes a 10-megapixel 3X optical zoom lens, offering greater versatility, though the lack of a longer zoom option, like the 5X optical found on rivals, remains a point of frustration for photography enthusiasts.
