Newcastle United and Aston Villa are reportedly gearing up to reignite their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen forward Christian Kofane when the January transfer window opens. The young Cameroon international was a target for both Premier League clubs in the summer, but a deal failed to materialize.
Kofane, 20, is set to remain in Germany for the first half of the season, giving Newcastle and Villa ample opportunity to scout him further and decide if he should become a top priority. Football Insider reports that both clubs plan to keep a close eye on his progress ahead of a potential winter move.
Regarded as a player with "huge upside," Kofane has impressed for Leverkusen. He notched seven goals and six assists across all competitions last season and has kicked off the 2026-27 campaign strongly with two goals in his first two appearances. This aligns with Newcastle's summer strategy of acquiring young talent with high potential, while Aston Villa has also been actively refreshing their squad.
However, competition is expected to be fierce. Both clubs underwent significant squad overhauls in the summer, with Newcastle bringing in players like Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Villa strengthening their attack with additions such as Ibrahim Mbaye and Nicolas Jackson. Kofane appears to be precisely the kind of player both clubs are looking for – a talent already performing at a high level in the Bundesliga but young enough to offer significant long-term development.
For Newcastle, Kofane could fill a void following the departure of Nick Woltemade, adding another athletic and technically gifted forward to their increasingly youthful squad under Matthias Jaissle. Villa, having heavily rebuilt their team after losing Ollie Watkins, might see Kofane as another promising player to grow with their revamped attack. The main hurdle, however, will likely be the transfer fee, as Leverkusen may be reluctant to part with one of Europe's rising stars mid-season, especially if his form holds.
