Hurricane Marie is projected to move away from the California coast, significantly diminishing the likelihood of widespread flooding and severe winds. However, the storm is still anticipated to generate hazardous surf conditions and intermittent tropical rainfall over the Labor Day weekend.
The trajectory of Hurricane Marie, which formed off the coast of Mexico, has been closely monitored. While most meteorological models indicated a westward path away from land, a few suggested a potential northward track towards Southern California, raising concerns for the holiday weekend.
Despite the low probability of a direct hurricane landfall, the storm's proximity is expected to cause considerable impact. A 6- to 8-foot south swell is forecast to bring dangerous surf and strong rip currents to beaches. Additionally, there is a possibility of rain and increased humidity, with temperatures expected to be in the mid-80s along the coast. Humidity levels may range from 35% to 50% throughout the weekend.
Meteorologists advise caution for those planning beach excursions. "We’d encourage people if you are planning a beach trip to swim where there’s a lifeguard and be aware of rip currents," stated Rose Schoenfeld, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard. Light rainfall, up to a quarter of an inch, is possible by Sunday across the region. Schoenfeld added, "If you’re planning an outdoor event and your tolerance for rain is very low, we’d encourage people to look into alternate plans."
The south swell is coinciding with elevated evening high tides, which could lead to moderate coastal flooding in low-lying areas such as Avalon, the Alamitos Peninsula in Long Beach, Malibu, and Point Mugu. The National Weather Service in San Francisco has issued a beach hazards statement, warning of 10-foot waves and strong rip currents from Friday morning through Monday evening. Similar warnings are expected for Southern California.
These hazardous conditions arrive in the wake of several tragic incidents and an increase in rescues along Southern California beaches this summer, underscoring the dangers posed by ocean conditions.
