The United States announced on Saturday that it destroyed three Iranian oil tankers in response to attempted missile attacks on U.S. naval vessels, marking the latest escalation in hostilities between the two nations.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the targeted tankers were linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and accused the IRGC of unsuccessfully firing at American warships. CENTCOM reported that the IRGC crude oil carriers M/T Downy and M/T Stark 1 were permanently disabled off the coast of Kharg Island and near Jask, respectively. Additionally, the unladen crude oil carrier M/T Kylo was completely destroyed in the Gulf of Oman after U.S. forces struck it in multiple critical locations, following the crew's evacuation.
Video released by CENTCOM depicted significant fireballs and flames resulting from projectiles hitting the vessels. According to the statement, these three ships were part of a substantial financial network supporting the IRGC and its regional proxies. In parallel with military actions, Washington has implemented sanctions on entities with financial ties to Iran, aiming to further isolate its economy.
Admiral Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, asserted that for every two U.S. ships targeted, Iran would face the economic cost of losing three of its own vessels. Earlier on Saturday, Iranian media reported explosions near Kharg Island, a major oil hub. Tehran had previously claimed responsibility for attacking U.S. military bases in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates on Thursday, vowing retaliation for alleged civilian deaths in a wedding party attributed to a U.S. strike.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance acknowledged an investigation into the alleged wedding strike, though he expressed skepticism. The Trump administration has sought to downplay the significance of the ongoing conflict, particularly as midterm elections approach. Vance described the situation as not constituting a "war" and characterized the exchanges of fire as minor, a sentiment echoed by President Donald Trump who referred to the Iran conflict as "small potatoes" for the United States.
Iran's security chief Mohsen Rezaei warned of a "new strategy" against the U.S. that would "shatter your foundations." The U.S. has been intensifying pressure on Iran regarding its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil supplies. A prior ceasefire collapsed in July after attacks on commercial ships in the strait. President Trump has previously asserted U.S. sovereignty over the strait and stated that negotiations with Iran would not resume until attacks on commercial shipping cease. The administration has also been communicating that oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz are returning to pre-conflict levels, with Vance asserting Iran's control over the waterway has diminished.
