Chelsea are reportedly gearing up to reignite their pursuit of Roma midfielder Manu Kone when the January transfer window swings open, but they might face stiff competition from Liverpool.
Kone, a French international, was a top midfield target for Chelsea last summer, particularly after Enzo Fernandez's significant move. Although a deal didn't materialize back then, the Blues haven't given up hope and are expected to make another play for him in January. Liverpool are also keeping tabs on the player, with manager Andoni Iraola reportedly looking to bolster his midfield options.
According to reports, Chelsea are ready to make their move for the 25-year-old as soon as the market reopens. They made a serious bid in the final days of the summer window, with a proposal reportedly around €60 million. The deal was reportedly closer than initially thought, with Roma and Chelsea having reached an agreement, and Kone himself excited about a potential Premier League move. However, Roma ultimately blocked the transfer as they couldn't secure a suitable replacement.
Now, Liverpool has entered the race, viewing Kone as a potential long-term addition, possibly for 2027, after his impressive World Cup performances for France. With Kone contracted to Roma until 2029, the Serie A club is in a strong negotiating position.
While Liverpool's interest is considerable, Chelsea arguably has a more pressing need. The departure of Fernandez left a void in their midfield, and failing to sign either Kone or Lamine Camara left them short. Kone could bring the physicality and ball-winning prowess that Chelsea currently lacks, especially when Moises Caicedo isn't available. He's also adept at carrying the ball through midfield, offering more than just defensive capabilities.
Liverpool, on the other hand, seems to have more flexibility. They already have a solid midfield lineup and appear to be planning for the future rather than addressing an immediate crisis. Chelsea, however, doesn't have that luxury and needs to act decisively if Roma becomes open to selling and can find a replacement.
