Incoming AC Milan coach Ruben Amorim is facing criticism for vetoing a transfer deal that would have sent left-back Pervis Estupiñán to Aston Villa, a decision that has reportedly backfired just weeks into the season.
The proposed move for Estupiñán, a former Brighton player, had reportedly been agreed upon by both AC Milan and Aston Villa. However, Amorim, who is set to take over as the new manager, intervened and blocked the transfer, a choice that is already proving unpopular.
Estupiñán's performance in a recent 2-2 draw against Lazio has drawn particular scrutiny. Despite Diego Moreira scoring two late goals to salvage a point, the team found itself in a difficult position partly due to what has been described as poor defending from Estupiñán on one of Lazio's goals.
Italian journalist Alfredo Pedullà, via SportWitness, commented on the situation, noting that Estupiñán appeared "asleep" during the defensive lapse. Pedullà suggested that Amorim's decision to keep Estupiñán over potentially integrating him differently, or allowing the Aston Villa transfer to proceed, is being questioned, especially given the defensive frailties shown.
The controversy highlights a potential defensive weakness for Milan, with both Estupiñán and his teammate Diego Moreira being seen as strong offensively but vulnerable at the back. This situation sets a challenging tone for Amorim as he navigates his early decisions at the club.
