iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 Drop: Smarter Siri, Stability Boosts, and More

Apple's latest software updates, iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, are officially here, bringing a range of improvements focused on everyday usability and a significant upgrade to Siri. While not a radical overhaul, these updates pack useful features that are set to enhance how you interact with your iPhone and iPad.

The main story here is Siri's AI capabilities, which have been supercharged. Apple claims its new third-gen foundation models, developed with Google's Gemini models, make Siri a far more intelligent assistant. You'll notice a fresh, glass-orb design for Siri, and you can now communicate with it via voice or text. A dedicated Siri app lets you revisit past conversations, and Siri is even integrated into the camera app for visual searches, similar to Google Lens. It can now analyze your personal data across apps like Mail and Photos to provide context-aware assistance, from drafting emails with specific tones to suggesting wine pairings.

Beyond the AI boost, iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 prioritize platform stability. Apple states app launches are up to 30% faster, photos load up to 70% faster, and AirDrop transfers are up to 80% faster. Network switching between Wi-Fi and cellular has also been improved to minimize service interruptions. These enhancements are designed to benefit even older devices, including the iPhone 11, thanks to a better-optimized CPU scheduler.

For those who use Apple Intelligence features, compatibility is key. While iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 are available on a wide range of devices, advanced AI features like those in the Photos app (e.g., "Extend" and "Spatial Reframing" for image editing) and the enhanced Image Playground require an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, or specific iPad models.

Other notable additions include refined child safety features with new parental controls for app setup, website approvals, and content filtering. Safari gets an upgrade with tab organization by topic and a notification system for web page changes, plus the ability to generate custom extensions based on your descriptions. The Shortcuts app also becomes more intuitive, allowing you to define tasks using natural language rather than complex rule-setting.
