New York authorities have successfully taken down over a dozen websites dedicated to creating and distributing non-consensual deepfake pornography, marking a significant blow against the harmful technology. This action, announced by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, is believed to be the largest seizure of such explicit deepfake sites to date.
The 12 seized domains were reportedly used for the unlawful sharing, publishing, and selling of celebrity deepfake videos. These sites depicted around 1,200 individuals, predominantly women, in explicit sexual imagery and videos without their consent. The victims included social media influencers, actors, activists, athletes, musicians, and politicians, highlighting the widespread nature of this violation.
"These horrific violations of privacy follow victims into their careers and personal lives and take an immense toll on emotional and mental well-being," stated District Attorney Alvin Bragg. He urged anyone who has been a victim to come forward and contact his office's cybercrime bureau. Investigations into the individuals responsible for operating these websites and uploading the damaging content are ongoing.
This crackdown, executed under New York's criminal procedure laws, represents one of the most substantial actions against explicit deepfake websites since the technology gained prominence in late 2017. As AI has advanced, a dark corner of the internet has emerged, featuring websites, apps, and bots designed to create realistic, sexually explicit content using individuals' likenesses, often generated in mere seconds.
While deepfake technology is frequently weaponized against non-famous women and girls, celebrities have increasingly spoken out about the severe harm and the difficulty in getting such content removed. Although legislation against deepfakes has been slow to develop, laws like the US Take It Down Act are starting to provide avenues for removing images and enabling law enforcement to seize websites hosting illicit content.
Although the specific website names have not been disclosed, takedown notices stating "THIS DOMAIN HAS BEEN SEIZED" have begun appearing on some homepages, confirming the seizure warrants issued by a New York State Supreme Court. Experts view these seizures as a crucial victory in the fight against synthetic nonconsensual intimate imagery (NCII), demonstrating that coordinated enforcement can effectively tackle such issues even with fragmented regulations.
