Smart Speakers Secretly Hogging Wi-Fi Data: Users Report Massive Usage

Some Google Home smart speakers have been secretly consuming an astonishing amount of Wi-Fi data, with one user reporting a staggering three terabytes over a couple of weeks. This issue, which also impacted the author's own Google Home speaker using 487 GB in ten days, has been linked to a server misconfiguration causing devices to repeatedly download software updates.

The problem came to light through Reddit posts and was further investigated by 9to5Google. While not affecting all users, the excessive data usage could significantly strain home Wi-Fi networks. Google has acknowledged the bug, stating that it affected only a subset of devices and that a fix has been deployed. A Google spokesperson confirmed, "A server misconfiguration caused some Google Home Speakers to repeatedly download a software update. This issue has now been resolved."

Beyond the Google Home issue, the author's investigation revealed other surprising data consumers. An Amazon Ring smoke detector, despite having minimal setup, reportedly used 22 GB in a week, comparable to a smartphone. Even more puzzling was a device labeled "WATCH" that consumed about 21 GB in the same period, with no smartwatches active in the household.

If you've noticed a dip in your Wi-Fi performance, the culprit might be a smart home device. Many routers offer built-in tools to track data usage per device, although some advanced features may require a subscription. Routers from brands like Asus and TP-Link are known for providing free traffic monitoring capabilities. Even without detailed router insights, most internet service providers offer apps or online portals where users can view overall data activity and identify high-usage devices.

While the author has a generous Wi-Fi plan and has unplugged their affected device as a precaution, this issue highlights the potential for unexpected data charges or network slowdowns, especially for those on data-capped plans. Regularly checking your device's data consumption can help you pinpoint and address any unexpected bandwidth hogs, ensuring your network runs smoothly.
