Chelsea Weighing Up Defender Sales Amid Defensive Woes

Chelsea is reportedly preparing to put two highly-rated defenders on the transfer market following a string of disappointing defensive performances this season.

According to Dean Jones of FlashScore, the club is considering sales after another shaky defensive display saw them eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Liverpool. The Blues have struggled significantly at the back, managing only two clean sheets all season under their current management, and conceding multiple goals in most matches.

While the issues aren't solely down to individual players, patience appears to be wearing thin. "It is anticipated that both Fofana and Gusto will become available on the transfer market," Jones reported.

The situation has left fans frustrated, particularly with Wesley Fofana, who has battled injuries and struggled to impress since his return, and Malo Gusto, who, despite availability, has been a consistent source of frustration. Both players were highlighted during the recent Liverpool match, with Gusto's counter-attack play and defending questioned, while Fofana missed a crucial penalty.

Finding buyers, however, could be a challenge. Gusto attracted interest from Manchester City in the summer, but Chelsea's valuation was reportedly too high. Fofana's substantial wages present a hurdle, and his significant transfer fee makes a sale without a substantial financial loss difficult. Potential suitors are likely observing the same weaknesses that have concerned Chelsea supporters.
