Manchester United have received significant encouragement in their pursuit of Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is increasingly expected to depart Selhurst Park in the January transfer window.
The Red Devils have been monitoring the 29-year-old forward for months, with their need for a new centre-forward intensifying due to Benjamin Šeško's injury issues. Mateta's Premier League experience and contract status position him as a potentially realistic mid-season target.
According to reports, Mateta is pushing for a January exit, and his representatives are actively seeking a suitable transfer. While Manchester United remain keen, Nottingham Forest, Everton, and other European clubs are also keeping tabs on his situation. Crucially, Mateta is understood to prefer staying in the Premier League.
United's interest is not new, with reports suggesting Jason Wilcox values Mateta's proven scoring record and Premier League familiarity. The striker is also reportedly open to a move to Old Trafford. Mateta has consistently hit double figures in his last three Premier League seasons, making him a lower adaptation risk compared to younger prospects.
Mateta appears to be a sensible solution for United. With Šeško viewed as the long-term No. 9, acquiring another expensive young striker could create future complications. Mateta, however, offers physical strength, an understanding of Premier League defenses, and the ability to lead the line immediately. His contract situation could also make him significantly more affordable than other targets valued at around £42 million.
While his age might limit resale value, January transfers are typically about addressing immediate needs. Manchester United are in desperate need of reliable goals and squad depth. If Crystal Palace are willing to sell and Mateta is keen on a move, this could be one of the most practical deals available to the club.
