Tigray challenges a Nobel laureate… Incredible scenes of an army of prisoners

There is no doubt that the war in Ethiopia entered a new phase two days ago with the fall of the Tigray region. Last week, the world was stunned by the sight of rebel fighters recapturing Mekele, the capital of the war-ravaged Tigray region in Ethiopia’s far north, as their leaders rhetoric and their supporters celebrated their return in the streets.

Perhaps the most powerful surprise came through the spread of wildfire images of thousands of Ethiopian soldiers loyal to the central government, captured in the hands of the rebels.

an army of prisoners

Pictures broadcast by international agencies showed an “army of prisoners”, similar to ant hives scattered in the region after months of fighting that only exacerbated the humanitarian situation in the region and destabilized security in a sensitive area in terms of ethnic composition, in a fatal challenge to the Ethiopian Prime Minister. Laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize, for his role in stabilizing and unifying the country after years of ethnic conflicts.

On the other hand, the leader of the “Tigray Liberation Front” Debrasion Gebremichael confirmed that the future of the region as part of Ethiopia “has become in doubt.”

He also described in an interview with the “New York Times” Abi Ahmed as “reckless and inexperienced”, considering that he exceeded his limits.

In addition, he revealed that 18,000 Ethiopian government soldiers were killed during the battles, while 40% of the senior officers in the Ethiopian army defected, according to his claim.

stop fire

These developments come in conjunction with repeated calls for the United Nations to urge the rebels to “agree to an immediate and complete cease-fire.”

The former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Political Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, announced that the international organization is urging the rebels, who have come to be called the “Tigray Defense Forces”, to “accept a cease-fire” previously announced by the Ethiopian government in the region.

“A ceasefire committed by all parties will not only facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, but will also be a starting point for the necessary political efforts to chart a path out of the crisis,” the official said last Friday, at the start of the first in attendance meeting of the Security Council since November.

Since last November, clashes have erupted between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray Liberation Front, against the backdrop of sharing influence, and the region has witnessed the displacement of thousands of residents fleeing the terrible rounds of violence between the two parties, which included accusations of crimes against humanity by government forces.
