An extensive search is underway for Jason Coughran, a 60-year-old hiker who has been missing since May 25 in the Desolation Wilderness west of Lake Tahoe. Nearly 200 search and rescue personnel, including volunteers, are involved in the operation.
Coughran, described as having an athletic build, embarked on a hike last Monday from Fallen Leaf Lake into the wilderness area. He was reportedly in the vicinity of Angora Peak around 11 a.m. on May 25, with the last known contact occurring that afternoon. The El Dorado County Sheriff's Department issued a public appeal for information regarding his whereabouts several days after his disappearance.
By Saturday evening, the search effort had mobilized approximately 200 personnel. Some participants were transported into the search area via a CH-47 Chinook helicopter operated by the Air National Guard, with about 50 individuals remaining overnight to continue the search. Authorities have described Coughran as a 6-foot-2, 150-pound white male with brown hair and hazel eyes, who may have been wearing khaki shorts.
Desolation Wilderness, located within the Eldorado National Forest, encompasses 63,960 acres of subalpine and alpine forests, granite peaks, and glacially-formed valleys and lakes. The U.S. Forest Service manages this vast recreational area, which is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
