LAUSD Incumbents Lead in Partial Election Results

Incumbent members of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Board of Education—Rocio Rivas, Kelly Gonez, and Nick Melvoin—are leading significantly in the initial vote counts for their respective seats.

The current election cycle appears headed for less contested outcomes compared to previous years, largely due to shifts in political endorsements and financial backing. Rivas, representing an Eastside district, received support from the teachers union, while Melvoin, whose district is on the Westside, was backed by a charter-aligned businessman. The union representing non-teaching employees largely remained neutral.

In District 6, incumbent Kelly Gonez is poised to secure a third and final term as the sole candidate on the ballot, facing only a write-in challenger. This lack of significant opposition has provided the incumbents with a comparatively unobstructed path through the campaign period.

If these initial returns hold, the LAUSD Board of Education is expected to maintain its current policy leanings, which generally favor caution regarding charter schools and express strong support for immigrant communities. The future of Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, currently on administrative leave pending a federal investigation, remains uncertain.

In District 4, incumbent Nick Melvoin holds a substantial lead over challenger Ankur Patel. Melvoin's campaign outspent Patel's considerably, with additional significant funding provided by retired businessman Bill Bloomfield, a notable supporter of charter school advocacy.

Similarly, Rocio Rivas is positioned to win a second term in District 2. Her campaign received substantial financial backing, primarily through an independent expenditure of nearly $889,469 from the United Teachers Los Angeles union, while her challenger, Raquel Zamora, reported much lower funding and spending levels.

This election cycle may signal a decline in the intense, high-spending contests that have characterized Los Angeles school board races in recent years, where the teachers union and charter school advocates often engaged in costly battles. Charter school supporters, who have previously invested heavily, appear to have largely withdrawn from extensive engagement this cycle, possibly reflecting diminished resources or a strategic shift.

Key decisions facing the board include managing a projected financial deficit, with differing views between union leaders and financial projections. The ongoing federal investigation into Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, reportedly concerning a district chatbot project, continues to keep him on administrative leave, with Andres Chait serving as acting superintendent.
