Sonja Shaw, a conservative Republican known for her involvement in culture-war issues, is leading in the primary election for California Superintendent of Public Instruction.

With over 80% of precincts reporting, Shaw has a significant lead over Democrat Richard Barrera. Both candidates are presidents of their respective school boards: Shaw leads the Chino Valley Unified Board of Education in San Bernardino County, while Barrera heads the San Diego Unified Board of Education.

Shaw's success in the primary is attributed to consolidating the Republican vote, while the Democratic vote was divided among seven candidates. Her campaign themes, including policies requiring parental notification for a student's gender identity expression and allowing challenges to library book content, appear to be resonating with a broader electorate, according to her statement.

Looking ahead, Shaw acknowledged the challenge of facing a single Democrat in a state dominated by the party, stating, "Tonight is not the finish line. It’s the beginning of the final stretch."

Barrera, who was unavailable for comment, received substantial support from a $5 million independent expenditure campaign by the California Teachers Association. He also benefits from his role as a senior aide to outgoing State Superintendent Tony Thurmond, who was term-limited and unsuccessfully ran for governor.

The office of State Superintendent oversees the California Department of Education, guiding local school districts and providing partial oversight. However, the office's authority and future are subject to potential changes, as Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed a plan to reimagine its structure and redistribute some of its responsibilities.
