One person was killed and three others were injured in a shooting that occurred Wednesday evening in the parking lot of Fairfield High School in Northern California, following a graduation ceremony.
Authorities reported that police responded to the incident at approximately 7:15 p.m. One victim was pronounced deceased at the scene due to gunshot wounds, while the three injured individuals were transported to a local hospital. Their conditions are currently unknown.
Fairfield Police Officer Michelle Belyea stated at a press conference that no arrests have been made and there is no information available regarding suspects. "It's a very scary incident when something like this does happen, especially during the end of a school event," Belyea said. "So, obviously, we just want everyone to be safe."
The shooting took place after the Sem Yeto High School graduation ceremony, held at Schafer Stadium. Nearby resident Amanda Prieto described hearing rapid gunfire from her backyard and witnessing a scene of panic. "It dawned on me quickly how close that rapid fire was," Prieto told KCRA. "I looked over the fence and people were just screaming and running through the parking lot. It was horrific."
Superintendent Jennifer Sachs of the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District confirmed the shooting occurred after the ceremonies concluded. "Law enforcement is on campus, and ... this is an active investigation," Sachs said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with our Sem Yeto community." The district announced that classes would proceed on Thursday, with mental health support teams and staff available on campus.
