Iranians Face Despair Amid War Deaths and Soaring Inflation

Following military strikes by Israel and the United States in late February, initial hopes among some Iranian opposition members for an end to theocratic rule have been extinguished, replaced by widespread disillusionment and despair. A reported civilian death toll of 1,700, extensive destruction, and an economic collapse have created severe daily hardships for the population.

While a cease-fire has halted the direct physical attacks, an accompanying economic war has led to a dramatic increase in the prices of essential goods. The disruption of key industries and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil export route, have plunged Iran's already struggling economy into a free fall.

Interviews conducted with over twenty Iranians across Tehran, Isfahan, Ahvaz, and Mashhad indicate confusion and anxiety stemming from fluctuating peace talks and premature U.S. declarations of an end to the conflict. "I’m angry. I feel alone," stated Kimia, a 25-year-old designer from Tehran. "We don’t matter to the world at all; we’re only seen as tools for war and negotiation, while we are human beings."

Furthermore, revelations reported by The New York Times that Israel and the United States had considered installing former hard-line president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as Iran's new leader have been met with considerable dismay. Several individuals expressed in interviews and on social media a feeling of being mere bystanders in a geopolitical game that profoundly impacts their lives.
