OPEC+ Boosts Oil Output Amid Unresolved Iran Conflict

OPEC Plus nations have agreed to increase oil production by 188,000 barrels per day in July, a decision made as diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire in the Middle East and reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz have faltered.

This latest commitment from the influential group of oil-producing countries follows recent pledges to raise output. While an increase in production typically aims to lower prices, the ongoing conflict and the resulting effective shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz, which handles a significant portion of global oil transit, render this increase largely symbolic.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) stated that member nations will continue to monitor market conditions and emphasized the importance of a cautious approach. This decision was reached during a virtual meeting involving key members such as Algeria, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Oman, Russia, and Saudi Arabia.

The conflict, which began with U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran and Iran's subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz, has led to soaring oil and gas prices, fueled inflation concerns globally, and prompted nations to seek alternative energy sources. Before the conflict, the Strait, a narrow passage to the Persian Gulf, facilitated approximately one-fifth of the world's daily energy supply. Consequently, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait have been compelled to reduce their crude production.

The ongoing hostilities have not only destabilized the global economy but have also strained political relationships within the Persian Gulf. In May, the United Arab Emirates withdrew from OPEC, a move that impacted the Saudi Arabia-led cartel. The UAE, historically a major oil producer with capacity for increased drilling, had long expressed dissatisfaction with the group's production quotas.
