United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep alarm over the escalating violence in the Middle East, urging an immediate cessation of hostilities and calling for Israel to reopen crossings into Gaza to facilitate humanitarian aid.
Guterres stated on Tuesday, "All attacks must stop immediately. The ceasefires in Lebanon, Iran & Gaza must be fully respected." His remarks follow Israel's strikes on targets within Iran on Monday, marking the first direct engagement since an April ceasefire. This action was reportedly in retaliation for Iran's missile launch against Israel, which Tehran described as a response to Israeli strikes on Lebanon's capital.
Both Israel and Iran indicated a halt to the exchange shortly after, though they reserved the possibility of further action. This direct confrontation between the two nations, the most significant since April, posed a threat to Washington's diplomatic endeavors aimed at securing an agreement to end their protracted conflict.
Furthermore, Guterres emphasized the critical need for humanitarian assistance in Gaza, stating, "I'm also deeply concerned by Israel's decision to close crossings into Gaza & reiterate my call for the immediate reopening of all crossings to ensure the rapid, safe & unhindered passage of humanitarian assistance at scale throughout Gaza."
A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, brokered by the United States and in effect since October 2025, includes provisions for enhanced aid delivery. However, both parties have frequently accused each other of violating the truce. Health officials report that Israeli strikes have resulted in over 950 fatalities since the ceasefire, while Israel asserts that four soldiers were killed by militants during the same period.
