Los Angeles authorities have identified the hiker who experienced a fatal medical emergency in Runyon Canyon as William Hasley, a 78-year-old screenwriter and educator.
Hasley, a veteran television writer, was also known for his work as an instructor at UCLA Extension's screenwriting program. His professional biography indicates he was a personal friend of Caitlyn Jenner and co-authored Jenner's motivational book, "Finding the Champion Within." The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office released Hasley's identity on Tuesday, with the official cause of death pending further investigation.
Emergency services were dispatched to the area near Nichols Canyon Road and Hollywood Boulevard shortly before 7 p.m. on Saturday following a report of a hiker in critical medical distress. The Los Angeles Fire Department deployed over two dozen personnel, utilizing a helicopter to reach the individual and facilitate immediate medical intervention. Despite these efforts, paramedics were unable to revive Hasley, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Hasley's extensive writing career included contributions to numerous television shows such as "The Smurfs," "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids," "Swift Justice," "Ghost Stories," "Murder, She Wrote," "Young Riders," and "Highway to Heaven." His professional biography notes a connection to sports through his work with NBC on the project "Star Salute to the U.S. Olympic Team," where he met Caitlyn Jenner. This collaboration evolved into a friendship, culminating in their joint authorship of Jenner's book on overcoming adversity.
Beyond his work with Jenner, Hasley ghostwrote several other motivational books, including titles for hypnotist Marshall Sylver and self-help expert Jeff Olson. He was dedicated to teaching, often likening the writing process to solving a puzzle, emphasizing the importance of character development for a fluid narrative. Hasley also enjoyed golfing, horseback riding, and was known for his community involvement, including volunteering at soup kitchens and speaking to youth organizations. He resided in the Hollywood Hills and was previously married to actor Robin Riker.
