Netanyahu Faces Electoral Challenge Amidst Iran Deal Fallout and War Criticisms

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces significant electoral headwinds in an upcoming autumn election, compounded by a new interim U.S. deal with Iran that has complicated Israel's strategic objectives and intensified domestic criticism. Already embroiled in corruption allegations and facing scrutiny over security lapses leading to the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, Netanyahu's tenure is now being judged on his handling of ongoing conflicts and Israel's crucial relationship with the United States.

Netanyahu, 76, has confirmed his intention to seek another term, despite current opinion polls suggesting his right-wing coalition is on track to lose. However, his history of political maneuvering in Israel's parliamentary system, where he has held significant power since the 1990s, means he cannot be easily discounted from forming a new government.

Supporters have long lauded Netanyahu as a security hawk, credited with thwarting the establishment of a Palestinian state and advocating for strong action against Iran and its proxies. He has previously stated, "There will be no Palestinian state to the west of the Jordan River," and asserted, "for years I have prevented the creation of that terror state, against tremendous pressure." Nevertheless, his security credentials have been questioned following the failures preceding the Hamas attack, for which he has not accepted responsibility. The prolonged conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon have resulted in substantial casualties and have not yielded decisive, lasting victories.

Domestic critics, including former military officials and families of hostages, argue that Netanyahu misdirected security focus away from the Gaza border and underestimated Hamas. While the war in Gaza initially garnered widespread public support, Netanyahu's management of it has drawn significant backlash. Despite celebrated military actions such as the killings of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Hamas maintains control in Gaza, Iran remains under its current leadership, and Hezbollah persists in Lebanon. Opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized Netanyahu, stating, "Netanyahu lost the war. Netanyahu did not deliver - at the moment of truth he collapsed," following a U.S.-brokered truce between Israel and Hezbollah.

Netanyahu has dismissed these criticisms as attempts to undermine Israel's achievements, warning of Iran's nuclear ambitions and emphasizing the necessity of Israel's actions. The extensive destruction in Gaza has led to international accusations of genocide, which Israel rejects. Netanyahu also faces an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for alleged war crimes, which he has deemed "absurd." His foreign policy has seen him court Western support while simultaneously clashing with U.S. presidents and other world leaders, leading to a strain in bipartisan support for Israel in the United States. Former U.S. President Joe Biden was reportedly quoted privately describing Netanyahu as a "son of a bitch" and "a bad fucking guy," and former President Donald Trump reportedly called him "fucking crazy" in a recent phone conversation.

Netanyahu's political career, marked by his rise to become Israel's youngest prime minister in 1996, has been characterized by forming coalitions of diverse political factions, including settlers, security hardliners, the ultra-Orthodox, and business interests. Despite facing a corruption trial, he secured an unprecedented sixth term in 2022, leading a government that included nationalist parties with expansionist agendas, which prompted widespread protests in 2023 due to proposed judicial reforms. His ambition to secure a legacy through the Abraham Accords, aimed at normalizing relations with Arab countries without necessitating Palestinian self-determination, has been severely undermined by the 2023 Hamas attack and the subsequent war in Gaza, casting a shadow over his historical standing.
