Moscow Downs Drones; Ukrainian Attacks Kill Five

Moscow reported intercepting nearly 60 drones overnight, while Ukrainian authorities stated that Russian drone and missile attacks killed at least five people across Ukraine and resulted in casualties among merchant vessel crews.

Authorities in the Russian capital announced the downing of dozens of drones in the early hours of Monday, leading to a temporary suspension of flights at several Moscow-area airports. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated on Telegram that emergency services were deployed to the affected areas, though he provided no further details. The aviation watchdog confirmed that flights at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovskiy airports were briefly halted before resuming.

The Russian Ministry of Defence, citing local news agencies, claimed that air defence systems downed a total of 301 drones overnight, including those targeting Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine. These incidents follow recent Ukrainian drone attacks on Moscow's sole oil refinery. In Ukraine, the repercussions of the overnight assaults were significant, with regional prosecutors reporting the deaths of a 13-year-old boy, his father, and grandmother in a drone attack in the Sumy region, while the boy's mother and two siblings sustained injuries.

In the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, a woman was killed and three others injured due to a drone strike, according to Ivan Fedorov, the regional governor. On Sunday evening, a Russian Iskander ballistic missile attack on the southern Odesa region resulted in one fatality and three injuries, with the strike hitting an agricultural facility and causing fires in vehicles and fuel storage tanks, as reported by regional governor Oleh Kiper.

Further east, in Sevastopol, Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, all open-air public events were cancelled, and street lighting was turned off. Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev urged residents to conserve electricity amid ongoing Ukrainian drone activity targeting supply routes and energy infrastructure, which has led to fuel shortages in the region. Crimea's fuel sales to the public and businesses have been restricted, with supplies reserved for essential services and security agencies.

Ukraine's navy reported that a Turkish dry cargo vessel, the Victress, sailing under the Panamanian flag, was struck by Russian drones, killing a 58-year-old Egyptian cook and forcing eight other crew members, including Turkish and Indian nationals, to evacuate. The vessel sustained considerable damage. Additionally, vessels flying the flags of Palau and Belize were reportedly attacked, though no injuries were reported, and the ships continued their journeys. Russia has intensified its targeting of Ukraine's maritime export routes, impacting vessels and ports crucial for foreign trade and the nation's wartime economy.
