Tottenham is reportedly in advanced talks with Newcastle United to sign midfielder Sandro Tonali, just after securing Matheus Fernandes in a club-record £85 million deal.
The North London club has made a significant splash in the transfer market, officially announcing the signing of the highly-rated 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder from West Ham. This move, which saw a guaranteed fee of £85 million with no add-ons or future sell-on clauses, was precisely what West Ham required to finalize the deal.
Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed on YouTube that while Fernandes is a massive coup for manager Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham isn't slowing down. The club is actively engaged in discussions with Newcastle United for Italian international Sandro Tonali, aiming to bolster their midfield significantly.
Romano quoted, "Tottenham arrived with an £85 million guaranteed fixed fee, no add-ons, no future-sell-on clauses... Now the price has been reached in full: £85 million, for a player strongly wanted by Roberto De Zerbi." He added, "Tottenham remain in conversations with Newcastle over Sandro Tonali. We’ll have to see how that develops too. But for sure they’re working hard to rebuild the midfield."
Journalist Ben Jacobs further confirmed on X that Spurs view Tonali as a separate pursuit from Fernandes, with the club aiming to secure both deals simultaneously. However, securing Tonali won't be straightforward, as Manchester City is also reportedly interested in the Newcastle star, aiming to strengthen their midfield depth.
With significant financial backing, Tottenham is building a formidable squad under De Zerbi. The club has already made several key signings, including free transfers for Premier League veterans Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka, and centre-backs Marcos Senesi (free) and Jan Paul van Hecke (£52 million). The potential addition of Tonali alongside Fernandes signals a powerful statement of intent for the upcoming season.
