Yemen Security Chief: Houthis Launched 180+ Ship Attacks with Iran's Backing

Yemen's Director of State Security, Major General Mohammed Aidah, revealed that Houthi militias have conducted over 180 attacks on vessels in international maritime corridors, resulting in damage to 46 ships and the hijacking of several others along with their crews. He issued a warning regarding the escalating threats posed by the militia to international navigation security.

Speaking before the United Nations General Assembly during discussions on the UN's Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, Aidah highlighted that threats to navigation in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and Bab al-Mandab Strait represent a significant challenge to regional and international security, given the persistent Houthi assaults on international trade routes.

He noted an increase in arms and drone smuggling operations, along with their manufacturing equipment, from Iran's Revolutionary Guard to the Houthi militia. Aidah affirmed that authorities have intercepted several ships and boats laden with such shipments, which contribute to bolstering the militia's military capabilities and prolonging the conflict.

The Director of State Security emphasized that Yemen faces mounting security challenges due to the ongoing war ignited by the Houthi militia in 2014. He pointed out that conflict zones provide fertile ground for terrorist group activities and pose a threat to security and stability.

Aidah stressed the importance of enhancing international cooperation and intensifying joint efforts to confront terrorism and cut off its support sources. He reiterated the Yemeni government's commitment to continuing collaboration with regional and international partners to safeguard security and stability and combat all forms of terrorist threats.
