That baffling, low-frequency hum some people worldwide report hearing might finally have an explanation. For decades, researchers have been trying to pinpoint the source of this mysterious sound, which can range from an irritating buzz to a physically uncomfortable vibration, and is often more noticeable indoors at night.
The phenomenon, known as "The Hum," first grabbed headlines in Bristol, England, in the mid-1970s, with residents complaining about an unexplained noise. While early theories pointed to industrial fans, reports persisted even after the source was shut down. Similar accounts later popped up across the UK and eventually spread to the United States, Canada, Australia, and parts of Europe. It's a truly global mystery, with reports emerging from Oslo to Taos, New Mexico.
Numerous theories have been floated over the years, from industrial noise and natural environmental sounds to wilder conspiracy theories involving secret government projects or even aliens. While many everyday technologies like ventilation systems, traffic, and windmills can produce low-frequency noise, and natural sources like ocean waves and wind exist, pinpointing a single cause for The Hum has been incredibly challenging due to the long wavelengths of low-frequency sounds, which allow them to travel great distances and make localization difficult.
A recent study by Markus Drexl and his team at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) investigated 28 individuals in Germany who reported hearing The Hum. They tested whether the sound was external and measurable or originated internally. While most participants didn't show exceptionally sensitive hearing for low frequencies, Drexl noted that standard hearing tests might miss subtle sensitivities in very narrow frequency ranges.
The researchers also explored the possibility of oto-acoustic emissions – faint sounds naturally produced by the inner ear. However, this hypothesis didn't pan out for the group studied. Drexl suggests that for many who hear The Hum, the most probable cause is a form of low-frequency tinnitus, a condition where individuals perceive sound internally, even without an external source. While some cases might involve genuine external sounds, Drexl's findings point towards subjective tinnitus as a frequent culprit.
Drexl emphasizes that more research is needed into how our auditory systems process low-frequency sounds and infrasound. As concerns grow about noise pollution from technological sources, a better understanding of low-frequency hearing is crucial for accurately assessing and addressing these environmental sounds.
