Three firefighters sustained injuries while combating a wildfire in the San Bernardino Mountains on Monday, with two remaining hospitalized in stable condition, officials reported.
The Green fire, which ignited shortly before 5:45 p.m. on a steep slope adjacent to Highway 38 near Mountain Home Village, presented significant challenges due to its location. A San Bernardino County firefighter experienced a terrain-related injury and was briefly hospitalized before being released, according to Chloe Castillo, a public information officer with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).
In a separate incident, two Cal Fire firefighters were injured when a rock shifted and became dislodged, Castillo confirmed. Both were under observation at the hospital Tuesday morning, with no further details on their specific injuries provided.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The blaze ignited in a remote and rugged area, characterized by difficult access for emergency personnel. All three injured firefighters were part of hand crews, which are specialized teams trained to operate in such challenging environments.
As of Tuesday morning, the Green fire had consumed 33 acres and was 5% contained. While not spreading rapidly, the fire was observed smoldering and creeping through vegetation along the ridgeline between rocky outcrops.
