Dyson Vacuums: Which Models Actually Shine?

After testing a range of Dyson vacuums, we've pinpointed the top contenders that are genuinely worth your cash, from the powerful new V16 Piston Animal to budget-friendly older models.

The Dyson V16 Piston Animal is currently leading the pack, boasting an impressive 315 air watts of suction and a 70-minute runtime. It comes with a new cleaner head and the Fluffy Optic head for hard floors, plus thoughtful design tweaks like built-in crevice tools and an easy-to-use head-switching mechanism. While its dust-compressing bin helps, some manual cleaning might still be needed. It tackles carpets and rugs like a champ, performing strongly in most tests, though it struggled slightly on a very thin rug. The HEPA filtration is a big win for allergy sufferers, effectively trapping pet dander.

What really sets the V16 apart is its versatility. It can be adapted into a wet floor cleaner with the Submarine variant, and a self-emptying dock is in the pipeline. However, these add-ons come at a significant cost, and the docking station's release date is still up in the air. If your home is mostly hard floors, the wet cleaning function might justify the splurge.

Beyond the V16, Dyson offers several other solid options, though they often perform best when found on sale. The upright Dyson Ball Animal 3 is a powerful choice for those who prefer that style, though it can be noisy and heavy. For spills and spot cleaning on hard floors, the Dyson Clean+Wash Hygiene Wet and Dry Floor Cleaner is decent, but it lacks suction power for larger debris. The Dyson PencilVac Fluffycones is a lightweight, easy-to-maneuver option perfect for hard floors, especially if you can snag it at a reduced price.

For smaller living spaces, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim is a compact and lightweight contender, but its price point might be high compared to newer models with more advanced features. Older models like the Dyson Big Ball Multi Floor and V11 can still be good buys if you find them at a steep discount, but newer, similarly priced options often offer better performance or features. The Dyson V8 Cyclone is outshone by the V10 Konical, which offers better cleaning and filtration for a similar or lower price.

Navigating Dyson's naming conventions can be tricky, with model numbers not always indicating chronological order. Terms like "Detect" refer to particle-measuring laser systems, "Absolute" usually means the model with the most attachments, and "Animal" or "Fluffy" often denote base models with fewer accessories. Understanding these terms and the various accessory bundles can help you choose the best Dyson vacuum for your specific needs and budget.
