Setting up the GV50 is a breeze, primarily involving the Google Home app for QR code scanning and app installation. The projector features auto-keystoning, which accurately maps the image to your screen or wall, even with ceiling projections, requiring only minor adjustments for size. Its remote sports a familiar BenQ layout with dedicated shortcut buttons for Netflix, YouTube, and Prime Video.
Connectivity options include a single HDMI port supporting ARC 5.1 audio pass-through or external sources, a USB-A port, and a USB-C port, both capable of handling thumb drives, hard drives, or charging devices, alongside a 3.5-mm audio jack. However, the GV50 lacks an Ethernet port and relies on older Wi-Fi 5, which, as experienced, can lead to connection issues with some modern mesh networks, and setup requires a significant system update.
The GV50 can operate for several hours on battery power, with settings available to manage efficiency and automatic shutdown. While the battery mode is a nice-to-have for remote use, the device's display dims slightly to conserve power.
In terms of picture quality, the GV50 performs as a mid-range projector. While 1080p resolution is supported, contrast and brightness are average, leading to less vibrant colors and some loss of detail in darker scenes. Skin tones appear fairly standard, and overall image vividness doesn't quite hit high marks.
Streaming performance can be sluggish due to the projector's 2 GB of RAM and 1.5-GHz processor. While both Google Cast and Apple AirPlay function, playback can be choppy or jittery, and attempting to fast-forward can cause streams to pause or fail entirely.
