New Jersey Meteorite Unlocks Secrets of Life's Origins

A meteorite that crashed through a New Jersey home's roof has provided scientists with a rare glimpse into the early solar system and the potential origins of life, according to a new study. The two-pound rock, recovered after a spectacular daylight meteor display over the Northeast on July 16, 2024, revealed unique characteristics suggesting a history of concentrated salty fluids on its parent asteroid.


The incident began with a dazzling meteor streaking across the sky, accompanied by a sonic boom near the Statue of Liberty. Shortly after, the meteorite made its dramatic entrance through a roof in Hillsborough, New Jersey. An international team of researchers has now analyzed the fragments, reporting their groundbreaking findings in the journal Science Advances.


The object, estimated to be the size of a heavy airline bag, entered Earth's atmosphere at approximately 32,000 miles per hour. Its trajectory was tracked by cameras across several states, tracing its path back to the asteroid belt. The rock was fragile, breaking apart in the atmosphere before the largest pieces, including the one that landed in Hillsborough, reached the ground.


Laboratory analysis classified the meteorite as a CM1/2 carbonaceous chondrite, a rare type of primitive meteorite. Scientists were particularly struck by evidence of extensive water alteration and concentrated salty brines just below the surface of its parent asteroid. This discovery has significant implications, as similar briny conditions on early asteroids are thought to have played a crucial role in producing molecules essential for life.


The meteorite contained a substantial amount of carbon and nitrogen, along with a diverse range of soluble organic compounds, including amino acids. Researchers suggest that these primitive meteorites could have delivered vital organic matter to early Earth, contributing to the building blocks necessary for life to emerge. Some fragments of this unique sample will be preserved for future scientific study at the American Museum of Natural History.
