A hammerhead shark, a species typically found in warmer waters, made a rare appearance off the Malibu Pier this week, with experts attributing the sighting to unusually high ocean temperatures.
Fisherman Ariel Kohanchi documented the encounter on Thursday afternoon, capturing video of the distinct hammerhead shape swimming near the surface. The shark, which circled the area briefly, appeared to have been briefly hooked by one of the fishermen but released the bait. This is the first such sighting near the Southern California coast in over a decade, according to species-sighting databases.
Shark specialist Brendan Talwar from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography explained that a combination of factors, including the late summer and early fall peak in ocean temperatures, a strong El Niño cycle, and the effects of climate change, has created conditions favorable for warmer-water species to venture north.
Talwar noted that while uncommon, hammerhead sightings in the region are not impossible under these circumstances and represent a significant event given the global decline of shark populations. He highlighted that hammerheads face severe threats worldwide due to overfishing and the demand for their fins, leading to "extreme declines" in their numbers.
He described the Smooth hammerhead, the most commonly sighted species, as generally curious but virtually harmless to humans. Previous sightings of hammerheads off the Southern California coast, including the Malibu Pier, occurred during the last strong El Niño cycle in 2015. These encounters led to public safety warnings for water users and some isolated incidents, including a kayaker being bitten.
Hammerhead sharks are easily identifiable by their distinctive hammer-shaped heads, which are equipped with electroreceptors that aid in locating prey. Their unique morphology and vulnerable conservation status make any sighting a noteworthy occasion, underscoring the urgent need for conservation efforts.
