Nottingham Forest joins race for Chelsea's Liam Delap

Nottingham Forest has emerged as a contender to sign Chelsea striker Liam Delap, adding another potential suitor as the 23-year-old's future at Stamford Bridge looks increasingly uncertain.

Delap is widely expected to depart Chelsea after a challenging debut season marked by injuries and inconsistent performances. The England U21 international reportedly favors a move within the Premier League, potentially giving Forest an edge over Italian club Como. Forest's urgency for a new forward has been amplified by Taiwo Awoniyi's recent £9 million transfer to Coventry City.

According to talkSPORT, Nottingham Forest are now alongside Everton and Newcastle United in their interest for Delap. Chelsea is reportedly prepared to sell the striker for approximately £40 million, a significant figure considering they paid Ipswich Town £30 million for him just last year. Delap found the net only twice in his debut season for Chelsea and has seen his position in the attacking pecking order drop following Danny Welbeck's arrival.

While Como is also exploring a potential transfer, Delap's preference is believed to be remaining in England. Chelsea's latest valuation, reportedly around £40 million, marks an interesting shift from previous reports by Sky Sports suggesting a £50 million price tag, hinting that their demands might be softening as the transfer window nears its close.

Forest could present a sensible option for Delap. Following an impressive 12-goal season with Ipswich, another year fighting for limited minutes at Chelsea might hinder his development. At Forest, he could find more regular playing time and rebuild the reputation that initially attracted Chelsea's £30 million investment.

The £40 million asking price remains substantial, especially after Delap's underwhelming season. Forest should exercise caution to avoid overpaying due to competition within the Premier League. However, Delap is still young at 23 and has proven his scoring ability in the Premier League. If Forest can negotiate the fee closer to Chelsea's initial outlay, it could prove to be a shrewd long-term acquisition.
