A Pasadena postal worker is under investigation after video footage captured him allegedly assaulting a neighborhood peacock, prompting outrage among residents and an inquiry by postal authorities and animal welfare officials.
The incident came to light when Gina Davis, a local schoolteacher, noticed the well-known white peacock, affectionately named Sugar by her family, appeared disoriented and unwell. Davis's concern led her to review her home security footage, which revealed the disturbing nature of the bird's condition: a postal worker was seen throwing a rock at the peacock before striking it again with an object.
The video shows the peacock approaching the mail carrier's truck, after which the employee reportedly exited his vehicle and struck the bird, possibly on the head or neck, with a club-like object. Distressed by the peacock's state, a neighbor contacted Pasadena Humane, whose subsequent review of Davis's video prompted a veterinary examination.
Kevin McManus, a spokesperson for Pasadena Humane, confirmed that the peacock is currently at their Wildlife Center. "He has been examined by one of our veterinarians, who noted several minor wounds with areas of swelling," McManus stated. "X-rays were taken, and thankfully, nothing appears to be broken." The bird's prognosis is positive, and he will continue to be monitored.
The U.S. Postal Service, in a statement, acknowledged previous encounters between postal employees and peacocks in the area and stated they are cooperating with Pasadena Humane. "We take allegations of inappropriate conduct seriously and will take appropriate action, as warranted, consistent with Postal Service policies," a spokesperson wrote. Pasadena Humane Animal Control is seeking additional footage from neighbors as part of their investigation.
While authorities investigate, Davis expressed more concern for Sugar's well-being than for the mail carrier's employment, suggesting a reassignment of the postal route. She described re-watching the video as "heartbreaking" and expressed uncertainty about Sugar's return to the neighborhood, hoping instead for the peacock to find a safe permanent home.
