China Confident in Defiance of US Iran Sanctions

China appears poised to withstand potential U.S. economic repercussions for its continued trade with Iran, despite President Trump's recent threats of severe consequences for nations maintaining business ties with Tehran. As Iran's largest trading partner, China's engagement with the Islamic Republic has been substantial for decades, including significant purchases of Iranian oil and the provision of technology for its military programs.

For many years, China has consistently circumvented Western sanctions targeting Iran's oil sector, importing as much as 90 percent of Tehran's oil exports. Furthermore, Beijing has supplied Iran with essential technology and raw materials necessary for the development of its missile and drone capabilities.

However, Chinese analysts express a degree of confidence that Beijing can absorb the impact of Mr. Trump's latest warning, should it be fully implemented. These analysts increasingly interpret the ongoing conflict involving Iran, which the White House has struggled to resolve favorably, as an indicator of diminishing American influence.

Wu Xinbo, a prominent scholar of American studies at Fudan University in Shanghai and an advisor to China's foreign ministry, commented on the situation. "This threat reveals how desperate the Trump administration has become on the issue of Iran," Wu stated. He suggested the threat was issued not due to a belief in its effectiveness, but rather due to a lack of alternative strategies for resolving a self-imposed predicament.

Mr. Trump declared on social media his intention to inflict an "economic D-Day" on Iran and penalize countries offering support. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent subsequently implied that Chinese cooperation would align with Beijing's own interests.
