Gaza Airstrikes Kill Boy, Wound Seven Amid Ongoing Tensions

Two Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on Sunday resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals, including a 4-year-old boy, and injured seven others, according to Palestinian health officials.

One of the strikes targeted a building in the central Gaza town of Zawayda. Residents reported that the Israeli army had issued a warning to the property owners to evacuate the area prior to the strike. Medics stated that debris spread widely from the explosion, injuring at least six people, including the young boy, Mohammad Abdel-Salam Taha, who later died from his injuries at the hospital. A displaced Palestinian sheltering nearby described the destroyed building as a "pile of mangled steel and concrete" and expressed a desire for peace.

The second airstrike occurred in the adjacent Nuseirat refugee camp, as confirmed by health officials. The Israeli military has stated it is investigating both incidents.

Despite a U.S.-backed ceasefire implemented in October 2025 that halted major hostilities in the Gaza Strip, strikes by the Israeli military have continued. Israel asserts these operations are aimed at thwarting attacks by Hamas and other militant groups. Late Saturday, the military announced it had killed Sharif Al-Hasnat, a senior Hamas militant it identified as leading efforts to restore the group's underground infrastructure in Deir Al-Balah.

Hamas has accused Israel of violating the ceasefire and impeding efforts to enact a broader peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, which includes Israeli withdrawals and Hamas disarmament. Gaza health officials report that over 1,280 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire began, while the Israeli military states four Israeli soldiers have lost their lives.

Separately, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, an Israeli man was wounded in a stabbing incident near Jericho. Police and the military believe the suspect to be Palestinian. Security footage released by the military shows a man near a vehicle on a highway who then stabs the Israeli man as he approaches his parked car. The suspect fled, and Israeli soldiers are conducting a search.

In another West Bank incident, Israeli forces shot and killed 14-year-old Islam Ajjouri during a raid on the Askar refugee camp near Nablus, according to health officials. The Israeli military is also investigating this event. The West Bank, populated by 3 million Palestinians and approximately 500,000 Israeli settlers, has experienced an increase in settler violence and land seizures. United Nations bodies and most nations consider Israeli settlements in occupied territories illegal under international law, a stance Israel disputes, citing historical and religious ties to the land.
