A new study has revealed that every single plant-based meat alternative and beverage sold in the UK contains fungal toxins, known as mycotoxins. While the levels found are below EU safety guidelines, researchers are flagging the potential for long-term health concerns due to cumulative exposure.
Researchers from the University of Parma and Cranfield University analyzed 212 plant-based products, including burgers, vegan sausages, and various plant milks. They found that all samples contained at least one of 19 different mycotoxins, with some products harboring multiple types. These toxins are naturally produced by fungi and can often be present in ingredients like grains, legumes, and seeds due to mold exposure during growth or storage.
Despite the universal presence of mycotoxins, the study noted that the concentrations in the tested UK products remained within safe limits, a testament to the country's high food industry standards. However, the concern isn't about single servings but rather the potential health impacts of repeated, long-term exposure to even small amounts of these toxins.
While eating individual plant-based items is unlikely to cause immediate problems, a diet composed entirely of plant-based foods could lead to a significant buildup of mycotoxins if not managed carefully. In extreme cases, mycotoxin exposure has been linked to serious health issues like liver and kidney damage, immune system suppression, and even cancer.
Experts emphasize that mycotoxins are a natural occurrence in food and shouldn't deter consumers. However, they highlight a gap in current regulations for monitoring these toxins in the rapidly expanding market of new food products. Collaboration between researchers, farmers, and food companies is crucial for integrating effective mycotoxin management into food safety practices.
The research aims to provide valuable data for assessing consumer risks, especially with complex, multi-ingredient products. Further studies are underway to evaluate population-wide risks based on different dietary habits, with the goal of informing policymakers and alerting vulnerable consumers.
