Law enforcement officials have dismantled a suspected catalytic converter theft ring valued at approximately $4.3 million, arresting five individuals across Los Angeles and Orange counties following a three-month investigation.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department, in collaboration with several other Southern California law enforcement agencies, executed search warrants on Thursday. This operation culminated an investigation into a series of catalytic converter thefts that had been ongoing for several months.
During the searches, authorities discovered approximately 2,400 catalytic converters, which they believe are connected to the theft ring. The stolen parts are highly sought after by thieves due to the presence of precious metals such as palladium, platinum, and rhodium used in their manufacture, as indicated by the U.S. Department of Justice.
In addition to the catalytic converters, the seized items included substantial quantities of precious metals, two unregistered firearms, and over $105,000 in cash. The recovered catalytic converters are estimated to be worth around $4.3 million.
The five individuals arrested on suspicion of grand theft and conspiracy to commit a crime have been identified as Jorge Alberto Delgadillo, 35, of Maywood; Julio Moreno Reyes, 40, of Los Angeles; Gilberto Valdovino, 27, of Los Angeles; Brayan Cruz De Leon, 20, of Los Angeles; and Hugo Saenz Marin, 24, of Compton. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department led the announcement of the arrests.
