Rooney: Man Utd Missed Key Signings in Summer Window

Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United made two significant transfer blunders this summer, stating the club still needs to acquire a top-tier goalscorer and a quality full-back to compete with elite football clubs.

The former United striker highlighted the need for another reliable finisher beyond the still-developing Benjamin Sesko. Rooney suggested that adding another striker would have been an ideal move for the club's trophy ambitions, although Manchester United's summer focus was primarily on strengthening the midfield.

In addition to forward concerns, Rooney pointed out the deficiency at left-back. Despite clear links to players like Lewis Hall from Newcastle United and an apparent need for competition for Luke Shaw, the club failed to secure the necessary defensive reinforcements.

Speaking on the "Stick to United" podcast, Rooney elaborated on his assessment. "I just felt, and the Everton game showed me what I felt as well," he said. "They [United] were the better team, had a lot of control in the game, but a lack of a No 9, so for whatever reason Sesko is not fully fit, he missed pre-season. [They’re] lacking a No 9, full-back position in terms of competition for places."

Rooney emphasized that while Luke Shaw is a capable player, his injury history means the team cannot rely on him for every match. He stressed the importance of squad depth and rotation to manage player fitness and performance throughout a demanding season.
