Liverpool are reportedly showing interest in AS Roma midfielder Manu Kone, a player who was previously on the verge of signing for Chelsea.
Chelsea had a strong pursuit of Kone during the summer transfer window, but ultimately shifted their focus to Lamine Camara from Monaco. That move for Camara also didn't materialize. While Liverpool has been linked with Camara since then, journalist David Ornstein has indicated that concrete confirmation is lacking, but he is aware of Liverpool's keen interest in Kone.
"Manu Kone from Roma. He came very close to joining Chelsea before they pivoted to Camara," Ornstein stated in a Q&A for The Athletic. He added, "I think Liverpool like him as well as one of their potential future options."
Ornstein further elaborated on Liverpool's midfield strategy, mentioning that the club would have considered further midfield signings if other players had departed, even with Curtis Jones's potential absence. Camara was noted as one such option. "I think there’s interest in Kone of Roma, and they’ll have other options as well. Don’t forget they’ve got Trey Nyoni there, who’s really impressing," Ornstein concluded.
The Reds have experienced a somewhat shaky start to the season, with two draws and only one win in their initial three Premier League fixtures. While a settling-in period under new manager Andoni Iraola is expected, questions may arise regarding the club's transfer market activity. Despite securing a significant attacking signing in Bradley Barcola late in the summer, it's suggested that more could have been done in the midfield department.
Both Kone and Camara are seen as players who could potentially bolster Iraola's midfield with a stronger defensive presence. While Ryan Gravenberch showed promise, a dip in form might make a player like Kone or Camara an attractive upgrade for the team.
