Michael Carrick is brushing off speculation about his Manchester United future following a stunning Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton that intensified the club's rough start to the season.
Manchester United appeared to be in control, with Shea Lacey and Mason Mount scoring within the first 10 minutes at Old Trafford, putting them up 2-0. However, Brighton staged a remarkable comeback, netting three unanswered goals to secure a 3-2 victory. This marked Carrick's third loss in six games across all competitions this season.
The collapse was particularly striking given Manchester United's historic record: they had won 143 of the previous 145 matches where they held a 2-0 lead at home. It was also the first time in 50 years that the club had lost at Old Trafford after establishing a two-goal advantage.
When asked directly if the mounting scrutiny over his position was affecting him, Carrick stated, "I don’t feel under pressure. Either way, that doesn’t bother me one bit. It generally doesn’t bother me one bit. I understand what goes on outside and how the world works, but it doesn’t bother me."
Carrick's comments come amidst a significant shift in atmosphere at Old Trafford. While he guided United back into the Champions League and secured 12 wins in 17 matches after taking charge last season, his first full campaign has proven more challenging. The club has now won only twice in their last six games, with this League Cup exit following a narrow derby defeat to Manchester City.
Acknowledging the team's second-half performance against Brighton, Carrick accepted responsibility, emphasizing the need for swift improvement. While external pressure is a given for any Manchester United manager, the current issues extend beyond media noise, pointing towards deeper concerns in game management and tactical adjustments when momentum shifts.
Although his successful work last season should warrant some patience, the pace of football demands results. Manchester United's upcoming Premier League match against Fulham has now become significantly more critical.
