Scientists are stunned by new research suggesting Earth's entire building material originated solely from the inner Solar System, challenging long-held theories about planetary formation.
For years, the prevailing idea was that a significant chunk, anywhere from 6 to 40 percent, of Earth's mass was delivered from the outer Solar System, beyond Jupiter. This theory was crucial for explaining how our planet acquired essential volatile substances like water. However, a fresh analysis of meteorite isotope ratios by planetary scientists Paolo Sossi and Dan Bower of ETH Zurich has thrown this into question.
By comparing existing isotope data from meteorites, including those linked to Mars and the asteroid Vesta, with Earth's isotopic composition, the researchers employed a novel analytical approach. Their striking conclusion? Earth's material came exclusively from the inner Solar System, with less than two percent, and possibly none at all, originating from the outer reaches. The study was published in Nature Astronomy.
"Our calculations make it clear: the building material of the Earth originates from a single material reservoir," stated Sossi. His colleague Bower added, "We were truly astonished to find that the Earth is composed entirely of material from the inner Solar System distinct from any combination of existing meteorites." This finding suggests Earth grew in a relatively stable environment, absorbing nearby smaller bodies.
This new perspective indicates that most volatile substances, including water, must have been present in the inner Solar System from the start. Scientists speculate that Jupiter's immense gravity might have acted as a barrier, preventing significant material transfer from the outer Solar System into the region where Earth formed. While this addresses the origin of Earth's material, it raises a new puzzle: how did the inner Solar System, previously thought to be too hot for such compounds, accumulate enough water to form Earth's oceans?
The ETH Zurich team plans to tackle this mystery next, investigating how Earth's water originated and whether similar planetary formation processes occur around other stars. As Sossi noted, "The scientific discourse over the building blocks of Earth is far from over, despite the new findings."
