Guns N' Roses legend Slash has a new namesake: a recently identified snake species from New Guinea. Dubbed *Lielaphis slashi*, or Slash's groundsnake, the honor recognizes the iconic guitarist's lifelong passion for reptiles and his support for natural history institutions.
Slash, born Saul Hudson, expressed his excitement about the scientific recognition. "As a long time herpephile, I am extremely honored and humbled to have *Lielaphis slashi* from New Guinea named after me," he stated. "It is really exciting, I never would have imagined this moment would arrive."
The naming came about through a collaboration involving researchers who study reptiles. Dr. Sara Ruane, Associate Curator of Herpetology at the Field Museum and lead author of the study describing the species, has a personal connection to Slash's music. She recalled being inspired by a magazine cover featuring Slash with a pet python as a child, which fueled her own aspirations to become a herpetologist. Upon rereading an interview with Slash where he discussed his childhood fascination with snakes and love for museums, Ruane felt he would be a fitting figure to honor with a new species.
The snake itself was discovered during fieldwork in New Guinea, an island renowned for its immense and often undocumented biodiversity. Initially encountered at night by Dr. Chris Austin of the Louisiana State University Museum of Natural Science, the reddish-brown snake, measuring about 28 inches, wasn't immediately recognized as a new species. Intensive genetic analysis and examination of physical characteristics, such as scale counts, ultimately distinguished *Lielaphis slashi* from its relatives. Ecological modeling also suggested it occupies a different habitat niche.
While *Lielaphis slashi* is not venomous to humans, its habitat in New Guinea faces threats from industries like coffee farming and mining. Researchers emphasize that formally describing and naming species like Slash's groundsnake is crucial for understanding ecosystems and guiding conservation efforts in the face of environmental change. This discovery highlights the importance of continued exploration and documentation of the planet's diverse life forms.
