Liverpool has been strongly advised against selling attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz, despite reported interest from Bayern Munich, with former player Vladimir Smicer backing the German international to succeed at Anfield.
Wirtz, who joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025 for an initial £100 million plus potential bonuses, has faced scrutiny over his performances not consistently meeting the high expectations associated with his hefty transfer fee. Bayern Munich, who previously showed interest, are rumored to be considering a move if Wirtz becomes available.
However, Smicer believes Liverpool should stand firm and give the 23-year-old more time to adapt to English football under manager Andoni Iraola. He highlighted Wirtz's quality passing and creative potential, suggesting that his contributions haven't always been reflected in the stats.
“It’s important to know how Florian is feeling about his time at Liverpool and the Premier League,” Smicer told TEAMtalk. “I don’t know if he is happy here but I believe he can still unlock something and still do well for Liverpool.”
Smicer added that he would not sell Wirtz to Bayern Munich or any other club at this moment. He thinks the player has more to offer and pointed out that some of his brilliant passes have not resulted in goals, partly due to teammates not finishing chances. Smicer also suggested that fans might be overly focused on the transfer fee, comparing the situation to Paul Pogba's time at Manchester United.
Liverpool's decision to keep faith with Wirtz could be crucial as the club aims for more consistent attacking output. While the Premier League demands a significant adjustment period, Wirtz has demonstrated his game-changing ability throughout his career.
