Liverpool might be gearing up to reignite their pursuit of Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh in the upcoming January transfer window, with sources suggesting the Reds still hold a strong interest in the 22-year-old talent.
The Merseyside club reportedly failed to secure Minteh’s signature during the summer despite making bids believed to be in the region of £50 million and £60 million. Brighton, however, held firm, initially demanding around £70 million and later reportedly increasing their valuation to £80 million before the window slammed shut. Liverpool ultimately decided against proceeding, with Minteh’s foot injury also cited as a significant factor in their decision to walk away.
Gambian journalist Foday Manneh has shed light on the situation, telling Sport Witness that Liverpool’s interest hasn't faded. "The only thing that is there is the possibility of Liverpool coming back for him in January. It’s still not ruled out," Manneh stated, emphasizing that Minteh's swift recovery and return to form could quickly reignite Liverpool's pursuit.
Manneh also pointed to a potential domino effect involving Cody Gakpo. "Because Cody Gakpo leaving Liverpool in January is still a possibility. So, if Gakpo leaves Liverpool in January, then Yankuba can be the player then they can turn to," he explained. The key, Manneh reiterated, hinges on Minteh's ability to "return to football very soon and play that good two or three games."
Minteh remains an appealing prospect for Liverpool due to his distinct skillset. He offers a naturally right-sided, left-footed attacking presence capable of directly challenging defenders and stretching the pitch, a quality currently lacking in the Reds' squad. While Brighton demonstrated a firm stance on price during the summer, Liverpool's strategic priorities in January, potentially influenced by player departures like Gakpo, could see them revisit the deal, provided Minteh proves his fitness and form.
