And unfortunately, it looks as though Barco isn’t ready quite yet to be starting in that midfield because I don’t really remember him particularly impressing on any part of the game."
Nicol elaborated on Barco's perceived weaknesses, stating, "His passing wasn’t incredible. He certainly doesn’t scare you physically. I don’t know how quick he gets around the ground because it didn’t look today as though he was quick. So, I’m not sure what his strength is. Certainly, I never saw any strength today." He emphasized the crucial role of the midfield in driving the team forward and regaining possession, a quality he felt was lacking, particularly in the second half.
Barco, who joined Chelsea from Strasbourg this summer with a contract until 2033, had a productive previous season with 12 goal contributions in 43 appearances. Despite his potential, his central Premier League debut highlighted the demands of the position, requiring rapid decision-making, physical resilience, and defensive discipline.
While one performance doesn't define a player, Nicol's concerns echo Chelsea's broader midfield instability. The team has conceded 12 goals in five league matches and is on a 21-game Premier League streak without a clean sheet. With key midfielder Moises Caicedo also unavailable, manager Xabi Alonso faces significant challenges in finding midfield balance, potentially needing to integrate new signings like Barco more gradually rather than relying on them for immediate solutions.
