Antonio Conte has openly discussed his frustrations during his time at Tottenham, specifically targeting the club's perceived acceptance of defeat and a "loser" mentality that he found deeply irritating.
The former Spurs boss, speaking in an interview with The Athletic, detailed his ambition to overhaul the club's winning culture upon his arrival in November 2021. He recalled a specific instance where he messaged chairman Daniel Levy after a poor result. Levy's nonchalant response, "Don't worry, we'll win the next one," apparently baffled Conte.
Conte expressed his dismay at hearing people around the club and in the wider football community constantly referring to Tottenham as a team that would "never win anything." He highlighted how this narrative, which he felt was even used to mock other teams, significantly bothered him.
This deep-seated frustration stemmed from Conte's own track record as a serial winner. Across his successful managerial stints at Juventus, Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Napoli, Tottenham stands as the sole club where he did not secure a trophy. Despite leading Spurs back to the Champions League in his first season, his tenure ended acrimoniously in March 2023 after a public criticism of the club's board and player mentality.
Conte's candid remarks provide further insight into the cultural challenges he felt were insurmountable during his spell in North London, issues that Tottenham continues to grapple with as they seek greater consistency.
