Israel Commemorates Three Years Since Hamas Attack Triggering Gaza Conflict

Israel is marking the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, an event that precipitated a significant military operation in Gaza. The anniversary arrives amidst ongoing dire conditions in the Gaza Strip, despite a ceasefire intended to permanently end hostilities.

The coordinated attacks by Hamas militants resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the taking of 251 hostages into Gaza, marking the bloodiest day in Israel's history. In response, Israel's subsequent aerial bombardments and ground incursions have led to the deaths of over 74,000 individuals in Gaza, according to health authorities in the territory.

Commemorative events are scheduled for Wednesday, including a vigil at the Nova music festival site near the Gaza border, where 348 young people were killed during the initial assault. A separate anniversary event will take place at Hostage Square in Tel Aviv.

This year's anniversary is the first since all hostages, both living and deceased, were exchanged for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. The remains of the final Israeli hostage were recovered in January. The commemoration also occurs just 20 days before Israel's first general election since the attack, with the vote widely perceived as a referendum on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's extended tenure. Netanyahu has refuted responsibility for the security lapse and resisted calls for an independent inquiry, a stance that has generated frustration among many Israelis, including families of attack victims, some of whom have entered the electoral race.

The anniversary also marks the first since a US-brokered ceasefire on October 10, 2025. While the agreement halted major combat operations, it has not prevented Israeli military actions in Gaza, nor has it led to the disarmament of Hamas or other militant factions. Current reports indicate that Israel controls approximately 53% of Gaza, a figure that has since expanded to nearly two-thirds, while Hamas retains control over the remaining third, where the majority of Gaza's 2 million residents reside in makeshift shelters and damaged structures.

Proposed rebuilding plans for Gaza, put forth by the United States, have not gained traction with either Israel or Hamas. These proposals have encountered obstacles, particularly concerning the property rights of Palestinians whose homes were destroyed. Ceasefire negotiations remain stalled, with both sides unable to agree on terms for Hamas to lay down its arms in exchange for Israeli troop withdrawals. Israel maintains that it will not withdraw until Hamas is fully disarmed, whereas Hamas has indicated a willingness for a phased process, contingent on the cessation of Israeli attacks. Gaza health authorities report that over 1,400 Palestinians have been killed since the October 2025 ceasefire, with the Israeli military confirming five soldiers killed by militants or in combat during the same period.
