Two men were discovered deceased inside a Long Beach residence early Saturday morning following a standoff that involved an exchange of gunfire with police and the deployment of SWAT officers.
The incident unfolded in the 3700 block of Gardenia Avenue after authorities responded to a report of two gunshots fired from a nearby home. Upon arrival, officers made contact with an adult male occupant who allegedly threatened to shoot them. Officers then retreated and requested backup, at which point the suspect reportedly discharged his weapon towards law enforcement.
In response, one officer also discharged their weapon. No officers sustained injuries during the encounter. The unidentified male suspect remained inside the residence, prompting the Long Beach Police Department to summon its SWAT team. SWAT officers eventually gained entry into the home.
Details regarding whether officers discharged their firearms during the entry into the residence were not immediately available. Upon entering the premises, police located two deceased men, both exhibiting apparent gunshot wounds to the upper body. Authorities have not yet identified the deceased individuals.
Investigators reported finding multiple firearms and other evidence within the home. "At this time, the circumstances for each decedent’s death remain under investigation," stated the police department. Officers involved in the incident were equipped with body-worn cameras, and the department indicated that the footage is under review and will be released to the public promptly.
