Ten Hag Admits He Fought for Kane Signing, Man Utd Went Another Way

Erik ten Hag has revealed that Harry Kane was his top transfer target for Manchester United in 2023, but the club ultimately pursued a different path. The manager admitted he "fought for" the England captain's signature before United opted to sign Rasmus Hojlund instead.

Following an encouraging first season at Old Trafford, United were in urgent need of a proven goalscorer. Harry Kane appeared to be the ideal solution, but he ultimately transferred from Tottenham to Bayern Munich. United invested heavily in the younger Hojlund.

In an interview with The Athletic, Ten Hag made it clear that Kane was his sole focus for a striker signing. He stated, "I said: I want only one player, and you know who." He added, "I fought for it. I heard that he was very positive, but I never spoke with him about the issue. I don’t know what happened…"

Ten Hag was informed that United would not proceed with the deal and admitted he was unaware of the exact reasoning behind the hierarchy's decision. Kane has since joined Bayern for approximately €110 million and has been remarkably productive in Germany.

This decision now appears even more significant in hindsight. Manchester United chose potential over certainty by signing Hojlund, whereas Kane was already an established Premier League record-breaker requiring no adaptation period. Ten Hag's need for immediate results makes his preference for an experienced option understandable.

Kane's continued success further highlights the impact of this transfer choice. According to Sky Sports, the striker has reportedly agreed in principle to extend his Bayern contract until 2029, following his prolific scoring record for the German club. While Kane alone wouldn't have solved all of United's structural issues, securing one of the world's most reliable finishers could have significantly altered the trajectory of Ten Hag's tenure and his legacy at the club.
